In collaboration with Community Tech Aid, Empowering Futures is narrowing the digital divide by integrating digital inclusion, sustainability, and meaningful social impact.
The collaboration focused on providing refurbished technology to individuals most in need, advancing both digital inclusion and environmental sustainability.
The Challenge
Many people remain digitally excluded due to the high cost of devices and lack of confidence in using technology. Meanwhile, countless usable devices are discarded, contributing to e-waste and resource waste. The challenge was to build a circular model in Southwark that benefits both people and the planet.
Our Response
The Empowering Futures team received refurbished laptops, desktops, and smartphones from Community Tech Aid, which were then distributed to residents across the London boroughs of Southwark and Lambeth. The recipients were also supported with basic digital literacy guidance, ensuring they could confidently use their devices for learning, communication, and daily life.
Impact
- Reach: 24 refurbished devices distributed.
- Social Value: Beneficiaries gained access to education, job opportunities, and essential online platforms.
- Environmental Impact: Reduced e-waste and extended the life of existing technology.
What’s Next
This collaboration is developing into a partnership that will allow us to reach and support more local communities across London. At Empowering Futures, we plan to introduce new digital literacy workshops, expand learning in AI, and provide mentorship through IFB Gaming’s ByteMentor programme — transforming device access into sustained empowerment and opportunity.
